Yoga Malas

A Yoga Mala is a string of beads used in meditation, part of ancient spiritual traditions that are used to count mantras, breaths or affirmations during meditation. There are 108 counting beads joined in a continuous loop united by a "guru" bead which marks the beginning and end of the meditation cycle. Along the loop there can be "marker" beads of different sizes or texture so that you can meditate without counting. Beads used in malas are made from natural materials, like rudraksha seeds or sandalwood and a variety of gemstones, which are thought to carry their own healing properties. Moving the beads through your fingers is a tactile way to focus the mind.
You can wear your beautiful mala on the neck or wrapped on the wrist as a spiritual accessory that reminds you of your mindfulness practice. Gently clean gemstones with mild soap, warm water and soft brush. Pat dry with soft cloth. Avoid chemicals, extreme heat and ultrasonic cleaners.
Each component of the mala is symbolic. If you want to learn more about the symbolism, or how to use a mala to meditate there are good guides out there if you search the internet.
